About Us

The Wheelchair Shop was founded in 1997 with a simple but powerful belief: people deserve to be treated like family, not numbers. Based in Michigan City, Indiana, we proudly serve individuals and families across Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois, providing mobility solutions that restore independence, confidence, and quality of life.

That belief became deeply personal for owner Scott Typpi when his uncle was involved in a devastating motorcycle accident. During his recovery, Scott watched firsthand as mobility providers rushed him through the process, offered little support, and failed to provide the care and respect he truly needed. No one took the time to do things the right way. That experience changed everything—and became the foundation of The Wheelchair Shop.

From the beginning, our mission has been to treat every customer the way we would want our own family treated. That means taking time to listen, educating rather than upselling, and standing behind our work. We don’t charge for labor, because we believe support and service should never feel transactional. Whether someone needs a wheelchair, accessories, repairs, rentals, or a custom installation, we focus on solutions—not sales quotas.

With experienced mobile technicians and a full range of mobility products and services, including stair lifts, vehicle lifts, modular ramps, and accessibility installations, we bring expert care directly to our customers. Every delivery, repair, and walkthrough is handled with patience, honesty, and attention to detail.
